Free camping in Quebec

Mapped campsites, Crown-land rules and live wildfire status — the road ahead, before you commit.

Quebec is the province the rest of the Canadian vanlife internet writes about least, and it is the one where the rules differ most: much of the Crown land equivalent is zoned, some of it sits inside ZEC or wildlife-reserve permits, and the camping that is genuinely free is concentrated in the outlying regions rather than near Montreal or Quebec City. This guide pulls what we have mapped here, the legal framing for public land in Quebec, and the SOPFEU fire feed. Honest caveat up front: our Quebec coverage is thinner than our Ontario coverage, and this page says so rather than padding the list.

Crown-land rules in Quebec

Quebec public land (terres du domaine de l'etat) is not a free-for-all. Short-stay camping is generally tolerated on unzoned public land away from residences and roads, but ZECs, wildlife reserves and controlled zones each sell their own access permits and can forbid camping outright. Get the zoning for the specific territory before you count on it; the official Quebec public-land pages are the authority, not any app.

Wildfire status & fire bans

Check active wildfires and fire-restriction status for Quebec before you commit to a route. Conditions change daily in summer; an open spot at breakfast can be an evacuation zone by dinner.
